For the last 17 years, November has been spelt with an ‘M’, and all for a very good cause. When Aussie mates Travis Garone and Luke Slattery were having a chat over some cold beers at the end of another working week, their conversation turned to men’s health and the need to raise awareness and funds — in particular, for mental health, prostate and testicular cancer. And so, Movember was born.
Men are very good at being very bad at talking.
Whether it’s a strange lump down below or the shadows lurking within, we have been raised to be ‘men’, to not show fear or vulnerability and to remain tough. But when it comes to our health, especially the more embarrassing or humbling aspects of it, talking can quite literally make the difference between life and death.
Travis and Luke decided to wear their cause with pride, growing moustaches that couldn’t be hidden and were out there for friends and family to see — the perfect metaphor.
